What is cannabidiol (CBD)?
Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is a phytocannabinoid that was discovered in 1940. It is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and makes up to 40% of the plant extract. As of 2019, clinical research on CBD included studies related to anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain. We have explained more information about the CBD effect.
How does CBD work in the body?
CBD interacts with our body's own endocannabinoid system (ECS), an essential network that acts as an interface between the body and the brain. This system, which is present in both humans and animals, consists of CB1 and CB2 receptors. As a non-psychoactive constituent, CBD acts as a key that binds to these receptors to regulate various physical and emotional processes. Interestingly, the human body produces its own cannabinoids, known as endogenous cannabinoids. An imbalance in their production can arise from factors such as stress and lack of sleep, or even anxiety disorders.
Why is CBD so popular?
CBD has become increasingly important in today's fast-paced world. Many people are looking for natural solutions to help them meet daily challenges. CBD can offer a natural and well-tolerated alternative.
Scientific studies increasingly emphasize the benefits of CBD for physical balance, during the day, and for better sleep quality at night. This is not a passing trend, but rather a reinterpretation of the hemp plant as a proven source of healing.
As one of more than 100 known cannabinoids in the hemp plant, CBD is said to have numerous positive properties. While the exact mechanism of action of CBD is not yet fully understood, it is known that it is not psychoactive and therefore does not cause intoxication. In addition to CBD, the hemp plant also contains other valuable substances such as terpenes, flavonoids, cannabinol (CBN), cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabichromene (CBC). It is also quite certain that cannabidiol has antispasmodic properties. It is therefore already used as a medication to treat spasms in MS patients and in children suffering from a rare form of epilepsy. Another possible field of application is CBD for pain.
However, additional studies and research are needed to confirm the further pharmacological potential that CBD is said to have so far. Meanwhile, user reports sound promising. At the latest since the legalization of cannabis as a medicine in Germany, hemp, a cultural and medicinal plant originally from Asia, seems to be getting more attention again. This is not surprising, because the components of the cannabis plant contain a lot of valuable ingredients. Healthy and sick people therefore expect cannabinoids, for example, to have a positive effect on their own well-being or medical condition.
