Cannabis has been decriminalized in Germany since 01.04.2024

On February 23, 2024, the German Bundestag passed the Act on the Controlled Use of Cannabis and on the Amendment of Other Regulations (Cannabis Act). On March 22, 2024, the Cannabis Act was confirmed in the Bundesrat.

The Cannabis Act consists of three parts: the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG), the Medical Cannabis Act (MedCanG) and amendments to existing laws.

Buy cannabis

Membership of a cannabis club is the only way to obtain it legally. They start on July 1. Members must live in Germany and be at least 18 years old.

Dispensing limits in cannabis clubs

Clubs may supply a maximum of 25 grams of cannabis per day to a member, and no more than 50 grams per month. Under 21s a maximum of 30 grams per month.

You can also grow up to three plants yourself. However, you are not allowed to give away the harvest, not even free of charge.

So far there is no new limit for THC at the wheel. The current limit of 1.0 ng/ml is so low that it is exceeded long after consumption.

Pharmacies can continue to dispense cannabis on presentation of a prescription. Free sale, for example in licensed stores, is not yet planned.

Advantages for cannabis patients

Under the new law, cannabis is no longer considered a narcotic, which simplifies the prescription process. However, health insurance companies can still refuse to cover the costs.
