Dr. John Cannell
John Jacob Cannell, M.D. (born June 21, 1948, Washington, D.C.) is an American doctor.
Education and career
Dr. Cannell obtained his medical degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Over the years, he has practiced psychiatry and worked as a general practitioner. His interest in Vitamin D began during his time as a psychiatrist in a maximum-security hospital, where he made a significant discovery.
While working at the Atascadero State Hospital in California, Dr. Cannell noticed that patients with lower levels of vitamin D were more susceptible to respiratory infections. This observation led him to research the relationship between vitamin D and the immune system, eventually concluding that vitamin D deficiency is a widespread health issue.
Dr. Cannell believes in the importance of evidence-based medicine and promoting healthy lifestyles. He emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to health, considering factors such as nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being. His work with vitamin D exemplifies this philosophy, as he recognizes the critical role this nutrient plays in various aspects of human health. He was the founder of the globally recognized Vitamin D Council.

Formation of the Vitamin D Council
Establishing a non-profit
In 2003, Dr. Cannell founded the Vitamin D Council as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to address the prevalent issue of vitamin D deficiency. He believed that creating a dedicated organization would help educate the public and medical professionals about the importance of maintaining healthy vitamin D levels.
The Vitamin D Council’s mission is to increase public awareness about the benefits of maintaining optimal vitamin D levels, promote research, and provide guidance on supplementation and sun exposure. Additionally, the Council aims to foster collaborations with other organizations and researchers in the field of vitamin D research.
The Vitamin D Council actively collaborates with research institutions, healthcare professionals, and other non-profit organizations. Through these partnerships, the Council supports research, shares knowledge, and works to implement public health initiatives related to vitamin D.
Impact of the Vitamin D Council
Awareness and education
The Vitamin D Council has played a significant role in raising awareness about the importance of vitamin D. The Council provides a wealth of information on its website, including articles, research summaries, and recommended dosages for different age groups. By making this information easily accessible, the Council has helped inform the public and medical professionals about the critical role vitamin D plays in overall health.
Scientific research and publications
The Vitamin D Council actively promotes and supports scientific research on vitamin D, often contributing to groundbreaking studies and publications. Through their commitment to research, the Council has facilitated a better understanding of the various health benefits of vitamin D, leading to more informed recommendations for supplementation and sun exposure.
Public health initiatives
As a part of its mission to improve public health, the Vitamin D Council collaborates with other organizations to create and implement initiatives that address vitamin D deficiency. These initiatives include educational campaigns, advocacy for improved food fortification, and the development of resources for healthcare professionals to better diagnose and treat vitamin D deficiency.
Dr. Cannell’s influence on the community
Dr. Cannell’s work with the Vitamin D Council has sparked numerous debates and discussions within the medical community, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of vitamin D’s role in human health. His research and advocacy have also led to increased recognition of the importance of adequate vitamin D levels and the need for evidence-based recommendations.
Dr. Cannell has been a strong advocate for evidence-based medicine throughout his career. His work with the Vitamin D Council emphasizes the importance of rigorous research and scientific inquiry to develop accurate guidelines for supplementation and sun exposure. This approach has led to more effective strategies for addressing vitamin D deficiency and promoting overall health.
Dr. John Cannell’s work with the Vitamin D Council has had a significant impact on the medical community’s understanding of vitamin D and its importance to human health. Through his dedication to research, education, and public health initiatives, Dr. Cannell has helped raise awareness about vitamin D deficiency and provided valuable guidance on maintaining optimal vitamin D levels.
